Computers - Redpower VS Computercraft - your choice?
« on: July 17, 2012, 05:41:14 AM »
So, i have installed both, Redpower 2 and Computercraft.
both of them are using different systems of computers.
which one do you prefer?

I think the Eloraams RP2 Computers are realy fantastic, i mean...the whole system is so complex...wow. But i dont like forth, the programming language is nothing i can handle that easy. i have learned C, C++, and Assembler, all of them are not that extremely different.
But forth with its stack operations is...not like the others.
So, the Computercraft Computers use lua as language, where the programming is much easier for me. Better loops, sub-programs etc, thats why i prefer the Computercraft computers.
Also you can edit your programs in Computercraft, thats impossible with RP2, there you have to rewrite it again.

so, what do you prefer? Coumputercraft or Red Power 2, and why?
Im talking only about the computers here, not the rest of them. Eloraams other stuff is great, especially the frames and filtering maschines.

Computercraft and Redpower 2 computers have their uses. Its basically the real world equivalent to Mac and Windows. It all depends on your needs. Currently, only Redpower 2 PC can run on a frame, while CC client crashes when the monitor gets moved. CC is the best option when you just need a PC to control a door for a password, while RP computer is best when running complex redstone.

so at this point, there is no one is better then the other, until Dan2000 updates his mod to allow movement from frames.

Comutercraft is a very good mod and the computers are definitely better than the computers include in RP2.

The RP computers take a bit to learn, but once you learn them, they are very powerful. The password program someone mentioned above takes about 30 seconds to program on an RP computer, so any more difficult.

I absolutely adore RP-control.
Along with frames it makes almost anything possible.
Flying frame miners are my favorites :)

The only useful thing in CC are the turtles. I don't even use those that often.
Just wish the recipes in CC where more balanced >_>.

While Lua is a much nicer language to work with than Forth, that doesn't mean CC is better than RPC.

The inspiration for ComputerCraft came from RedPower-Control (it has been in development far longer).

CC has Turtles and a nice language whereas RPC works with Frames and I guess is more powerful (you could write your own OS or interpreter for it which afaik is not possible in CC).

If you already use RedPower then I'd go with Control, yes it's difficult to get used to a stack-based programming language. Man up.

I have been ruining my server whit both for a will, and I have not run into the crash problem you mentioned using frames and computer craft.
