Server Clarification..

My Fellow Creeper Dodging, Tree Punchers,

I am in need of your clarification on something. Recently, with so many people talking about the up-and-coming 1.3 release, and the combination of SSP and SMP mod useage, I started looking into what would be required to just set up a minecraft_server.jar with the commonly used mods we all love. And, on the very first step, I became stumped.

When I went to the minecraft.net site, and decided to DL the .jar for it to use (on Windows mind you.) What confused me was that; it comes as a .rar folder or zipped file. And, exploring further, I realized there isn't an actual minecraft_server.jar inside said zip file either. Now, I'm techie to a point, but this absolutely confused me. Where or how am I suppose to find, access or create said server.jar from?

I understand the META-INF within the .rar you download would have to be crushed for mods to work, as with the Forge and all that installed into the jar as well, but there's simply no .jar to play with. So, I turn to you my diamond chasers to ask for clarification, and assistence in explaining this in a more step-by-step process. Thanks ahead of time.
